Kangaroo Time Kids, workshop & presentation

A live session where students sing, move and make to learn the science, where kids meet kangaroos through music, dance, and embodied movement, and meet the scientific method at the same time. They watch how a behavioural scientist observes, asks a question, designs a way to find out, and reports back. Then they try a version themselves. The session brings the Kangaroo Time approach into the school hall.

What students do

Watch · move with the music · learn the science behind kangaroo behaviour · try a mini-observation · perform back a short piece. Adaptable from a 45-min assembly to a half-day workshop block.

How it
works

M.01 / Five steps

Start with a real idea: a true piece of science, not a fact to memorise. Find the human angle: students remember what they feel, not what they are told. Translate it: the idea carries into music, dance and performance, often through a kangaroo, a rhythm or a story from another world. Bring people in: students make something with it, a verse, a move, a mini-observation, and take part instead of just watching. Leave one clear thing: the close lands one idea students keep, and the confidence to tell it back.

STEAM
alternatives

T.02

STEAM Karaoke

A whole-class karaoke project where students rewrite the lyrics of a song they already love into a science story, animals, ecosystems, behaviour, anything we can sing about. Then they perform it. Loud, silly, and weirdly memorable.

T.03

STEAM Parody

A guided workshop in turning a real piece of science into a parody video, pop song, ad, news segment, TikTok format. Students learn the science by having to translate it. They leave with a finished short piece.

T.04

Choreographing Science

Movement-based workshop where a group of students choose a scientific concept, an animal behaviour, a cycle, an ecosystem interaction, and build a short dance piece that shows it. The closest cousin to the Kangaroo Time Kids method.

Transforming Science Into Compelling Art

A practical professional development workshop for teachers who want to translate science into work students actually feel, songs, performance, movement, video, story. Shortlisted in the Top 30 worldwide for Falling Walls Engage 2025, the global prize for transforming science into compelling public communication.

What teachers leave with

A repeatable method, a folder of facilitation prompts, three classroom-ready entry points (karaoke / parody / choreographing science), and the confidence to run a session where students sing, move and make to learn the science without needing to be the artist in the room.

What this
delivers

  • Kids feel close to the natural world, kangaroos, behaviour, ecology, through music and movement
  • A session where students sing, move and make to learn the science, one they remember and want to talk about
  • An entry point into scientific method that doesn't feel like a lesson
  • Teachers leave with practical tools they can re-run themselves

Incursion
FAQ

What is a school incursion?

An incursion is an in-school program. Dr WELI comes to your school and runs Kangaroo Time Kids, turning animal-behaviour science into music, dance and embodied learning, so students take part with their bodies and meet the research through play.

What year levels is it for?

Primary and lower-secondary students. Formats run from whole-school assemblies to STEAM classroom sessions and festival keynotes.

How long is a session, and what formats are available?

From a 30 to 60 minute assembly or activation to half-day and STEAM classroom formats, shaped to your timetable and delivered in plain language, available in more than one language.

Does Dr WELI hold a Working With Children Check?

Yes, a current NSW Working With Children Check and ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration, so we are cleared for schools across New South Wales and the ACT.

Is Dr WELI a qualified teacher?

Yes. Dr WELI holds a Licentiate and BSc (Honours) in Biological Sciences with a teaching focus and a teaching internship, alongside a PhD in ecology and evolution from ANU.

Do you travel across Greater Sydney, Canberra and regional NSW?

Yes. Greater Sydney, Canberra and the ACT, and across Australia by arrangement.
